Protect the Gaviota Coast

 The Gaviota Coast is the largest remaining rural coastland in southern California. It boasts working ranches and farms, and is home to 1,400 species and their habitats. And yet the region is under constant threat of development.

On August 10, the California Coastal Commission will hold an important public hearing to consider the Gaviota Coast Plan, and we need your help! The Plan provides an important opportunity to protect the environmental, agricultural, scenic, cultural, and recreational resources of the nationally-renowned Gaviota Coast.

Please email the Coastal Commission and let them know that you support strong protections for the Gaviota Coast. Please consider making the following points:

  • Support the Suggested Modifications that enhance protections for environmentally sensitive habitats, agriculture, public access, views, and cultural resources;
  • Ask the Commission to not allow camping, including walk-in camping, in protected habitat areas as such activity will harm the habitats and create unacceptable fire risks; and
  • Ask the Commission to make sure that extra development rights are allowed on agricultural lands only if new trails are open to the public.
